Photographer's Note

A young giraffe standing next to one of the females in the herd...

As usual, there was only one male giraffe in the herd. He was bigger than the females, and had much darker spots.

This was taken at 500mm (750mm on the Nikon D100), and again from quite far away.

Giraffe (Giraffa camelopardalis):
Male giraffes can weigh between 970 and 1395 kilograms. A giraffe's diet is mainly leaves, but it also eats grass. Its habitat is open woodland to shrubby, dry savannah. An interesting fact about giraffes is When a giraffe walks, the legs on the same side swing simultaneously. And, although they appear clumsy, they can gallop surprisingly fast.
