Photographer's Note

A Southern Yellow-Billed Hornbill we found in the Khutse Game Reserve. One of the most recognizable symbols of Africa.

I saw one of them the previous day, but the bird was too far away and too careful to get close enough to photograph it. This day, however, I got lucky and managed to get a few shots in. This was taken at 500mm (750mm on the D100) so I was still quite far away and quite pleased with the result. It was an overcast day, and I was taking these shots from an idling Land Rover, so I had to push the ISO up to 500 to make sure I get a shot in with the long Sigma lens.

Southern Yellow-Billed Hornbill: Its habitat is thornveld and dry, broad-leaved woodland. Its call is a rapid, hollow-sounding 'tok tok tok tok tok tokatokatoka'. In calling display the head is lowered and the wings are fanned.
