Photographer's Note

Everyday ships of all sizes navigate the Yangtze River. From near Shanghai to Chongqing boats make passage. Near half way between these two great cities in China lies the famous Three Gorges. The river narrows and high cliff sides create an impressive canyon feel as one travels the area by boat. Some years ago China embarked on a massive project creating a hydro-electric dam rivaling all, The Three Gorges Dam.

Pictured here is the view of one of the ship locks as one would experience it heading upriver. About 8-10 large river ships and boats enter the locks. There are four sequential locks, thus boats move from one lock to the next taking about eight hours to pass the dam and continue on upriver. Each lock looks about the same size as pictured here. It is an impressive structure.
