Photographer's Note

The older part of Beijing to the west of Tianamen Square is composed of many aged gates and buildings. This is a gate door into a small courtyard beyond which is the main building or buildings. The door and its frame would be around 500-600 years old. The contrast lies between the light and the shadow's darkness; the muted colours of the door and the colourful letterboxes; and, 'the age' difference. Unfortunately, this heritage residential part of Beijing will be demolished over the next two years to make way for highrise office buildings and residences, much to the chagrin of current residents who fear that they will not be adequately compensated when the buldozers move in.
