Photographer's Note

Dear Friends,

I shot this beautiful moment when I traveled Nubra Valley at the first week of July, 2012. This is Hunder (Land of Sand Dunes) a village of Numbra Valley.

Beautiful but remote, Hunder village sits like an oasis in the middle of cold desert in Nubra valley of Jammu and Kashmir. Seven km from Diskit which is known for its Buddhist monastery, Nubra has acquired fame for its sand dunes, the cold desert that surrounds it, Bactrian camels and its breath-taking natural beauty.

Situated close the Siachen glacier and Pakistan border in Jammu and Kashmir in north India, entry beyond Hunder village is barred as the area ahead is controlled by the Indian Army. Hunder is approximately 160 km from Leh and one has to cross Khardung La, the worlds highest motorable pass to reach the remote village.

The cold desert and sand dunes seem enigma to scores of tourists who come to visit the spectacle.

Bactrian camels are another attraction. Native to the steppes of central Asia, the Bactrian camel has two humps, in contrast to the single-humped camels found in Rajasthan and other parts of India. The Bactrian camels were the main mode of transport when Ladakh was an important stopover on the ancient Silk Routes (trade routes) with Central Asia.

I got an opportunity to visit this place.

Hi Swapan,
The ligt here's really amazing, the way those beams reach over the mountains and illuminate the desert is just spectacular, I am not surprised this place draws many people. One thing that strikes me in your scene is the people riding into the light on the fit hand side, they give the whole image an almost religious feeling. This is yet anoth wond of your gallery, thank you for sharing.

Hello Swapan,

The backlight is quite amazing, like a giant searchlight from the skies, illuminating the slopes of the mountain and acting like a guiding light to the trekkers. A very nicely composed shot and one full of lonely atmosphere.

This fascinating area seems to be one of the most distant and least accessible parts of the world. You were lucky to see it. The strong light seeping through the clouds has created a spectacular pattern of sunrays across the dark silhouettes of the mountains.

Hello Swapan,
Very interesting note about the oasis in the cold desert.
Beautiful beams of light illuminating the sand on the foreground and making the mountains look mysterious.
I heard of that worlds highest motorable pass. It must be a spectacular trip. I remember my journey from Manali to Leh long time ago. And Khardung La is even higher.
