Photographer's Note

She was a Hindu dancing girl. He, the 5th of the Qutb Shahi sultans, was a Shia Muslim, having ascended the throne at age 15. They married in 1589 CE. In 1591 CE, he founded the city of Bhagyanagar, naming it after his wife Bhagmati, and constructing the rightly famous and unique Charminar. Her tomb and mosque repose in the royal necropolis north of Golconda Fort. In fact, she supervised construction of the mosque, having converted to Islam in 1605 CE. She died February 24, 1667 CE. The tomb and mosque date from about that time, as it was the Shahi custom to erect tombs during their own lifetimes.
