Photographer's Note

This photograph was taken from the Durbar Hall atop Golconda Fort 1.3 kms south and a bit east of the Necropolis. It presents the tombs of the first five of the Qutb Shahi rulers that are located in the southwest quadrant of the gardens. I will list them from left to right, and these are the major domes only.

Starting to the left, the first structure of two storeys is the tomb of Jamsheed Quli Qutb Shah who ruled from 1543 - 1550 CE (2nd ruler). He ascended the throne after murdering his father, Sultan Quli Qutb-ul-Mulk, while the latter was at prayer in the Jami Masjid. Next, a smaller structure, is the father's tomb, again Sultan Quli Qutb-ul-Mulk (1st ruler) who ruled from 1518 - 1543 CE. Originally, he had served under the Bahmani ruler, Mohammad Shah.

Next, the third tomb and most southerly of the group, is that of Ibrahim Quli Qutb Shah, the 4th ruler of the dynasty from 1550 - 1580 CE and the brother of Jamsheed.

Now, I cannot confirm this, but I believe the fourth tomb is that of the third Shahi ruler, Subhan Quli Qutb Shah, aka Chhote Malik, who ascended the throne at the age of 7, under a regent, and died in the same year of 1550 CE. His tomb is centre on an axis between Jamsheed (2nd) and Muhammad (5th ruler).

Finally, the fifth and largest tomb is that of the poet-ruler, Sultan Muhammad Qutb Shah, ruled from 1580 - 1611 CE, and is noted for the founding of the city of Hyderabad in 1591 CE. The tomb, complete with mosque is in the same style as his consort's. It rests on a platform about 57 metres square and the structure is of the same height including a 17 metres high dome. The terrace is the setting for occasional food, poetry, and musical festivals in the city.
