Ahmedabad Slum, a photo from Gujarat, West

Photographer's Note

The capital of the Indian state of Gujarat, Ahmedabad, aims to eradicate its extensive slums by upgrading the infrastructure and building low cost housing for the poor on the land of abandoned cotton mills. The first phase of the scheme will be finished this September. Most of the urban slum dwellers previously worked in the cotton industry. So far they chiefly lived along the riverfronts in low-lying areas on vacant private or government land.. Typically these people do not have hygienic facilities and basic amenities. It is estimated, that more then 20% of Ahmedabads population of more then 4 million within the inner city alone lives in slums, mostly Muslims and members of low cast Hindus. Victimized by the police, municipal authorities and the upper classes alike, this group represents a particularly vulnerable section of society.

My picture shows one of these typical slum settlements along the river front while a the horizon some of the social low cost housing can be seen.

Very sharp contrast! People who make those high rise or keep them running. Very sad but true story in any depeloping part of the world.

Hello Urs,
Not easy for these villagers to follow the step, speed and living style of city people at a country with large population, good pov to show traditional houses against background buildings, thanks for sharing an old photo.

Hello Urs. In the foreground cheap small huts and behind it massive houses, - indeed a large contrast. But the time keeps running. Perhaps looks here into few years everything differently. For me this photo is ideal for TE. Regards, Wolfgang.

Really outstanding photo, not just a superb architecture photo, or a great daily life scene, but an excellent example of photojournalism, perfect documentary photo, showing in an incredible clear way the huge contrasts in the huge cities of Asia! Urs, firstly I am adding you to my favorites list so I keep track of your posts, they are interesting. I like your view on this one, not exotic but pragmatic and honest. Shot works for be because it not only shows the fg slum but the bg of some "not so fancy" high rise apartments. Color and crispness of focus are on the money, good work.

Hi Urs,
I like this one very much. Initially it is not much seen. But upon thinking, the contrast is so well composed. Not only on the colours, but the slum and the high rise buildingd. The lighting is so good in the foreground and the great blue sky too.
This is a very nice social shot to me, talking about something that cannot be felt. Only upon seeing, you do realise certain degrees.

Very interesting contrast, which depicts a sad reality, and it is very strong in the picture. The trees in the middle help a lot in the composition. Good work!
