Photographer's Note

Varanasi is considered to be one of the holiest cities of India and many bodies are cremated as per Hindu rites on the banks of Ganges, in a bid to attain salvation. However, not everyone is granted the right to be cremated. As per the belief of the localites, the bodies of children below twelve years, pregnant women, those who have lost their lives to snake bites, lepers and diseased people are tied to rocks and left to rot in the holy river itself. Some bodies that are not tied too strongly manage to float on the surface of the river. People bathing in the Ganges are oblivious to these bodies floating next to them.

In this photo, you can see a corpse’s feet peep out of the river, as my boat passes by the Ghats.
