Photographer's Note

On my long Asian journey in 1972-73 I spent about six weeks in Burma, Thailand and Laos before returning to India. I got stuck in Calcutta for a while after the trains going south were stopped because of political unrest and strikes in two coastal states. Finally I decided to fly straight to Madras (nowadays known as Chennai).

This is from the city beach in Madras, many years later devastated by the terrible tsunami of December 26, 2004. It is not a beach were many people actually go swimming, and in 1973 I think it was mainly used by fishermen. Nowadays carousels and other kinds of entertainment, snack bars and ice cream vendors attract a lot of people.

I will add a street photo as a workshop. Both photos were scanned from Kodachrome slides.

Here is a larger version.
