Photographer's Note

Since my previous upload of a scanned slide from a long-ago trip to Burma I have looked in my old passport and realised that this trip was made in 1977, not 1976! I can, however, remember clearly taking this picture, one that I liked enough to have printed and framed in about 1981. I can recall quickly swinging my camera into position to take a shot of this school bus as it rolled past in one of the dusty streets of Maymyo, near Mandalay. Even then, 33 years ago, the bus looked as though it came from another world; I think it was more like an old truck with a timber structure for passengers built on the tray behind the driver's cabin.

Looking at it now I am struck by how apparently happy these children were, and of course I wonder what might have happened to each of them over the years. I don't think Burma, or Myanmar, has ever been noted for its contribution to happiness.

It's just a fleeting moment, children passing by, waving or smiling, or just plain staring; but when I look at it I really study each of the faces, which I now know so well, and am struck by a feeling about the transience of all things and a wistful nostalgia. I think that is the very essence of photography.
