Photographer's Note

There are ancient Greek, Roman and Byzantine settlements to the left which is the main reason tourists come here. Over the centuries, the estuary silted up forming this lagoon, which became a prime breeding ground for mosquoitoes. The Byzantine settlement was abandoned when Malaria became a problem. Today the lagoon is used for growing oysters and they must spray it with insecticide, as I didn't see or feel a single mosquito. There is a little trash on the shore but it was too muddy to go in and remove it. Butrint is opposite Corfu Island in Greece.
