The Brandnertal Ray Photo

Photographers Note

I begin today to post some pictures of my trip to the western Austrian Land Vorarlberg last week, there will be a few ones mostly landscape oriented to populate this somewhat neglected Bundesland of Austria.

So here we're over Brand, the village at the end of the first valley encountered after Liechtenstein, at the end of a morning walk over the village my eye was caught by this strong descending clear diagonal, unfortunately I do not have the geological background to tell you what and why it is, but optically it provided a strong pointer to the house. The apparent red patch near the top left corner is not a trace of paint on my captor, it's really there on the mountain ;-)

Cest génial! Le type possčde une rampe de lancement juste ŕ côté de sa maison. Comme le reste de lAutriche, les montagnes sont ŕ couper le souffle. Bien que tu sois relativement prčs de la maison, celle-ci semble toute petite vis-ŕ-vis des impressionants sommets.

Belle composition, avec en effet une belle diagonale qui nous mčne directement dans la petite maison dans la vallée...

Seems to be perfectly linear landslide! Now this one has excellent contrast and the 'beam' is carefully positioned to point the old house. Well planned composition.

An impressive picture, Jean Yves, this diagonal is really strong and you were lucky to have a house for it to point at. What a lovely chalet it is by the way:)

Ce ne serait pas simplement un éboulis la diagonale?
Ca compose évidement bien la photo, la diagonale dont on ręve...

J'ai été deux années dans le Montafon, 15 jours de pluie la premičre fois et mieux (pas difficile) l'année d'aprčs, faudrait scanner les archives...

Beam me up! This is an incredible feature, difficult to imagine from this distance just quite what it is but it certainly makes for a powerful compositional element, especially as it points directly to this lonely house. Beautiful landscape with nice lighting too.

Bonjour Jean-Yves,
Cette blanche diagonale qui descend de la montagne vers la maison, il crée une composition originale, il nous divise la photo deux parties. En avant le sien, la maison, avec des ombres jolies, et derričre, un paysage alpin splendide avec de hautes montagnes et une vallée profonde, avec une grande perspective.
Illumination excellente et couleurs parfaitement saturées et naturelles.

That would have to be the steepest bicycle gradient I've ever seen. Perhaps they could include a detour to Austria, for the Tour de France?

That diagonal slide (some kinda granite rock formation I suppose?) is spectacular. You sure this isn't PP work?
Seems like a giant stone quarry or a gateway to heaven! Maybe they're trying to build a new pyramid or something. And this is huge, with that tiny house acting as scale. Good shot, very interesting.

A quite nice landscape shot from Vorarlberg, JY. Good diagonal provided by the moraine (that's what it might be but not an expert either), pleasant light filling the green slopes of the valley, and a good inclusion of the old farm building for a foreground compositional interest and colorwise contrasting detail.

A premičre vue, il me semble d'un pierrier géant (ou éboulis, pour reprendre le terme de Didier). Cela signifie que les rochers qui se trouvent au-dessus sont particuličrement instables et s'effritent réguličrement pour recouvrir ainsi toute la pente. Mais il est possible que je me trompe...
Quoi que ça soit, c'est trčs photogénique dans la lumičre matinale et cela fait une belle diagonale qui pointe droit sur le chalet.

et oui, bien jouer pour pointer cette maison. On ne pouvait mieux faire.
Un panorama grandiose qui s'étend des kilomčtres derričre.
Mais dont on se plait ŕ admirer les détails.
Parfaites couleurs, un cadrage tip top.
C'est bien composé.

Hi JY. Well I just got my laptop today and your picture is looking great on it. That could be a lateral moraine but I'm not sure. Including the house at the bottom helps complete the shot for me. Good one!

Quel panorama on se sent tout petit petit, c'est d'ailleurs le sentiment de habitant de cette petite maison, la lumiere est magnifique, quelle diagonale, cela me rappel un peu le pays basque ou le bearn.

Il y avait la petite maison dans la prairie, il y aura la petite maison dans la montagne. J'aime bien celle ci c'est une histoire de contraste de taille et d'élements comme ce reste de lit de glacier qui traverse l'image.

I took this picture and not your last posting, I find this picture much better, you play excellent with sun and shadows, but also his the colours his wonderful, together with a lovely background, you did very well the small house addition.

Hi Jean Yves...
I wish if you have used the polariser to give more light to the house in shadow. The view is great, nice pointing diagonal, you could have made a bit lighter shot in the shadows.

Nice composition including this sun illuminated mountain slide in the center of the picture and pointing it to the house. This slide just shows that even something looking everlasting like the Alps will eventually end up at the bottom of the ocean.

I'm impressed by your composition here and overall POV. The shadows have helped you out here and the framing of the building to the right works very well compositionally. Impressive mountain ranges and the light is not too bright either, as is so often the case in these locations. Very nice work.

A very striking composition, Jean Yves. The bold diagonal of the ???? leads the eye from the top left hand corner into the shadows in the bottom right neatly dividing your image into two triangular landscapes. The small house is perfectly positioned and f/8 gives excellent DOF, and you have good sharpness in the background landscape. When I did my geomorphology classes at school I learnt the name of that ???? - but for the life of me I can't remember it now. If I do, I will come back and replace the ????s with its proper name (it is made up of loose eroded rocks so can be quite dangerous to climb - although it looks easy). Cheers . . . David
