Photographer’s Note

This is "my" village - Partenen, the uppermost settlement in Montafon valley and the southernmost village in the Austrian state Vorarlberg. It is situated in an altitude of 1050 metres and it has about 500 inhabitants. Until 1954 here really has been "the end of the world", but then Silvretta Hochalpenstraße, a most impressive Alpine pass street, has been built, connecting Vorarlberg (Partenen) with Tyrol (Galtür). It actually had been built in order to transport building materials to the storage lakes high above the village and it culminates in Bielerhöhe on the lakefront of the storage lake Silvrettasee in an altitude of 2050 metres. It runs upward in the valley right hand behind the village in my photo and it gives opportunity of numberless hiking options .
Fortunately a bypass has been built in order to keep the pass traffic out of the village.

As you can see, Partenen is situated in a trough valley which was shaped by an Ice Age glacier and it is surrounded on three sides by steep slopes. The visible slope in background has an altitude of about 500 metres and it raises altogether 1200 metres above the village - please see workshop photo.

My photo was taken during a hike in the mountains when some sunrays suddenly illuminated the bottom of the valley.
I partly spend my holidays here since 1961 and I have been there till now nearly 60 times. Arriving there is like coming home, feeling good ... there's something special for me about this village, this valley, these mountains ...

In map view right hand I put the marker on my position when taking this picture.
