Historic of the picture;
The historic St. James Church on the federal level, an important place of worship for the Catholic mass.
It is both the Church of the Royal parish as the cathedral of the Diocese in the Armed Forces.
Historically this church is a symbol of unity for our country. She is on the Mont des Arts in the immediate vicinity of large state institutions (the Constitutional Court, the State Audit Office and the Royal Museums of Fine Arts of Belgium). She is to this day a place for contemplation and prayer.

Place before the church:
In the Middle Ages Brussels was dominated by the huge Coudenberg palace. This architectural ensemble grew from the 12th century into one of the most beautiful palaces in Europe, also was a main residence of Emperor Charlemagne.
In February 1731 this prestigious building was severely damaged by a fire. Forty years later, the ruins were demolished and paved the ground for the construction of the Place Royale. The remains today the archaeological site of the Coudenberg.
During the visit you can saunter along the underground Isabella Street and discover the main buildings of the former palace. Some of these structures are the foundations of the current pavilions Royale. In Hoogstraeten you can see a selection of the finest archaeological objects that were discovered during the various excavations on the Coudenbergsite.
