The third picture from Leuven, with a view of the east side of the Library with a new statue of the balloon and basket.

History of the University library from Leuven.

See my previous picture Leuven 1914, now 26 year later again an attack on these nice city.

On May 13, 1940 the canal basin and other parts of Leuven were immediately hit by German bombing. The British fled on May 16, the city, the next day the Germans came.
The University and was again struck, this time during an artillery duel between German and British troops. University library 900,000 books were engulfed by the flames. Even the newly re-acquired papal foundation's bull of 1425, a document of inestimable value, was miserably lost. The fire of the library was the use of propaganda from both the Germans (who claimed that the opposition had lit the fire) and the Allies (who claimed that the German artillery deliberately shot at the library).
For nearly four years in Leuven was then the military administration in the hands of Kreiskommandant Von Thadden. Professor Richard Bruynoghe war was mayor.
In the spring of 1944, Leuven was heavily bombed. Especially 12 and 13 May were tough days. St. Peter's Church was partially destroyed, the sculpture hall severely damaged.
In other churches, the damage was enormous. The newly built Round Table was also damaged. During the retreat was also set on fire. When too many bridges were blown up, which caused even more damage.
Leuven was again a difficult recovery.
