Ghent St Antoniuskaai en Gewad 2017

Where now the weeping willows used to be the swallow - many ships that came via the Lieve van Damme were too big to enter the city (or were not allowed in because they were from unfree skippers). They then had to unload their goods here, and turn around to return.
The turning circle was filled in around 1830, because trade with Damme became insignificant due to the silting up of the Zwin (and the Lieve itself). On the square (which is now the Children's Rights Square) the feeders and movers were given space to park their horse carts and carts.
The neighborhood around the Lievekaai is worth a visit: the Prinsenhof and Gewad poles, also the Sint Antoniuskaai is very picturesque (including the Bridge of Imperial Delights, with images of Walter De Buck).I hope you can enjoy.
