Photographer's Note

This photo is for Emka who will be in Paris next week...

Perfectly integrated in the perspective of the historical axis and visible from the Esplanade, Neuilly and facing the direction of the Arch of Triumph, stands forty-nine bright colored heads that flash on a random rhythm. These frail sentinels are the work of the Greek sculptor Panagiotis "Takis" Vassilakis, a Greek artist whose works can be found in many public locations in and around Paris. Takis, who describes himself as an "instinctive scientist," employs powerful, elemental forces to generate the forms, movements, and musical sounds of both his static and kinetic works.

This monumental artwork seeks to pick through what Takis calls "signals" an invisible reality, a cosmic mystery that escapes us. In this pool, the multicolored lights that seem to be mounted on springs seem to sway gently to the wind, echoing other signals sent from the other side of the Esplanade, at the level of the Grande Arche where his second work, the ‘Signaux Lumineux’ is, serving coded messages that we do not see.

At night, their lights blink quietly and seem to respond to the agitation of car headlights and signal lights on the streets below, the artist described as "ways of moving lights."

This piece of artwork was inspired from a "call for ideas" in 1974 by the Public Development Agency of the La Défense region, emphasising the importance contemporary art should have in the creation of the new business center.

Tip: The metro station 'Esplanade de La Défense' of Line 1 will bring you directly to the Takis pool.
