This is not a sad picture of a wreck. It’s the photo of “Le Bel Espoir” (= Good Hope).
Most of the inside is still good, but the wooden hull needs to be replaced, and they will do it in metal this time.

What makes it special is its story. It was recuperated by “Père Jaouen”, and he had it put back afloat by youngsters, as many girls as boys, who had dropped out of the norm due to “accidents of life”. But not only ! Ordinary trainees will also be taken on, for the sake of social diversity.
Père Jaouen brought these youngsters from wherever he found them, and gave them the hope of a sailing cruise over the oceans if they worked hard at renovating the ships in the yard, learning a trade at the same time.
As well as the trainees, some paying guests will join the cruises, again for social diversity and also for funds. No luxury of course, and everybody gives a hand in a friendly atmosphere.

“Père Jaouen” died in 2016 at the age of 96, by which time he had helped some 15 000 youngsters to get back on the right track. And of course, the work carries on after him.

The shipyard is situated on the northern coast of Finistère-Brittany on the “Aber-Wrach” in the commune of Lannilis. See map.

We visited the place in March, and in september, the boat was in the news, because its new metallic hull was finished at Concarneau. They still have a lot of renovating work to do, but they intend to take part in the famous old ships reunion in "Brest 2020", where they will not only invite the people to sail on board, but also to witness the renovation work and meet the people involved. I thought that a ship with such a name and such a story was appropriate to wish you all a lot of “Good Hope” for the New Year.

Bebel had opened a theme about this charity which includes the "Bel espoir" and its sister ship "Rara Avis" which often sail alongside each other.
