Photographer's Note

The bronzes Goddess carved by Theophilus Bra (Douai-native) and drawn by the architect Charles Benvignat was set up on the Main Square in 1845.

In her right hand, a “blaster” being used to light the wick of the guns. Left it indicates the inscription engraved on the base and answer of the mayor of Lille, in 1792, with the Austrian ultimatum whereas the city was besieged:
“We have just renewed our oath to be faithful to the nation, to maintain freedom and the equality or to die in our station, we will not be perjuries.”

As much to say, it had not lost North!
