Photographer's Note

St Michael church is the largest Renaissance church north of the Alps. It was built between 1583-97 in two stages. In the first stage (1583-88), its building followed the model of Il Gesu in Rome and was built as a Jesuit church. After the tower collapsed in 1590, the original plan was abandoned and much larger church was built as a spiritual center for the Counter Reformation.

The church contains tombs of many important people from German history. It was severely damaged during Second World War and restored in 1946-48. Stuccowork was restored most recently, between 1980-83.
