Photographer's Note

Schelenburg, the oldest castle in the "Osnabrücker Land". It is still inhabited by the last members of the family von Schele, who run an agricultural business. Some years ago there was a café in the old vault, and you could also sit outside on a small terrace, almost your feet in the ditch. To my great disappointment the café is closed, I don`t know wether too much tourists disturbed the familiy living there or not enough visitors came to pay the employees.

" Its oldest part is the gothic residential tower. It has a wall thickness of 2.5 meters and stands on oak piles. In the middle ages it was completely surrounded by water and could only be reached via a ladder to the first floor. The once multiple staggered moat system around the castle is still partially preserved today. In 1490 a fire destroyed residential and farm buildings, the massive residential tower was spared. From about 1500 to 1532, a Renaissance building was built in sandstone on the foundations of the burned-down residential building."
