Photographer's Note

Several times I already showed you artworks from the church "St. Maria zur Wiese" (St. Mary in the meadow) in the picturesque Old Town of Soest in the eastern part of North Rhine-Westphalia - in my opinion one of the most beautiful Gothic churches of Germany - above all because of its gorgeous interior space, its magnificent windows and the outstanding religious artworks.

Here I show you the midsection of the so-called "Aldegrever Altar" or "St.Mary's Altar" which was made 1526/27. It was carved by an unknown master of this time whereas the wings of this altar - please see workshop photo - were painted by Heinrich Aldregrever.

In my photo you can see in the middle St. Mary with the child, left hand St. Antonius Abbas (St. Antony the Great, St. Antony the Abbot, also called "Father of All Monks") and right hand St. Agatha.

Already in 1531 the church "St. Maria zur Wiese" became a protestant church and this altar was the last pre-reformatory work of art - made für this church.
Fortunately the iconoclasm on the occasion of the reformation in Westphalia and especially here in Soest wasn't as disastrous as in other regions. It is said that Westphalians are level-headed people.
By the way - I'm a Westphalian ... ;-)
