The Parthenon is a building made entirely of Pentelic marble and situated on the Acropolis of Athens. The Parthenon was dedicated to the goddess Athena Parthenos, protector of the city and the goddess of war and wisdom. It is not a temple in the strict sense (the statue was not the subject of a ritual that took place in the 'old temple of the Acropolis which was formerly a representative xoanon Athena Polias) but a building designed to house chryselephantine statue of the goddess Athena Parthenos, the work of Phidias that the Athenians had their offerings. He was also to house the treasures of the city, in the form of gold reserve in the nave (the 1150 kilos of gold which made up the statue can be melted if necessary) and the adyton which includes funds the city of Athens and the Delian League.
This is probably the best-known classical Greek monuments. It was built from -447 to -438 by architect Ictinos up and decorated by the sculptor Phidias -432, on the initiative of Pericles.
