Photographer's Note

There is a knot, called a "monkey's fist",usually weighted with lead, braided into the throwing end orange "heaving line". The Bosun's mate throws the knot & line from the deck of the ferry. When the line handler on shore catches the knot, he hauls the mooring hauser ashore and will slip it over that yellow bollard at the left of the photo, allowing the vessel to tension the hauser with a power winch, pulling itself into position on the dock.
