Crocifissione – Dettaglio - Museo del Ducato di Spoleto
Work by the Maestro delle Palazze, anonymous painter from Spoleto, active in the second half of the thirteenth century and in the first of the following. His style originates from the thirteenth-century Umbrian tradition; influenced by Pietro Cavallini, Cimabue and the Master of Capture in Assisi.
The fresco is part of a cycle from the monastery of Santa Maria inter Angelos in Spoleto, called delle Palazze.
It was carried out between the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries in the monastery of Santa Maria inter Angelos. The current allocation is at the Museum of the Duchy of Spoleto.
In addition to the Crucifixion, already on the ground floor of the monastery, in the Museum you can admire the sinopia of a second Crucifixion, coming from the environment of the first floor, same origin for the sinopia of the Parousia, the second coming of Christ, already erroneously identified as the Last Judgment , at the bottom left is the Madonna della Misericordia. Another sinopia of the same origin depicts the Last Supper and in a box, at the bottom right, the Oration of Jesus in the garden. The derision of Christ, very damaged, was saved from the theft of 1921 and the museum of the Duchy preserves the original, just as the Madonna and Child between Saints Francis and Clare is original, which was located on the ground floor next to the Crucifixion.
