Photographer's Note

Funchal Marina at Dusk, taken from the seafront path - a few images stitched together in PanaVue ImageAssembler. Sticking my little DiMAGE X on a tripod would have been laughable, so I used the wall to steady myself!

Funchal is the capital city of Madeira (a Portugese island in the Atlantic, north of the Canary Islands). Most people seem think of Madeira as a holiday destination for the elderly, but in fact it is a well kept secret. There is plenty to do during the day (hiking, dolphin and whale spotting, eating!), and there are several bars and clubs open into the wee hours.

Whilst Funchal is obviously catered for tourists, the native population far outnumbers them outside the city. Yellow taxis (which, incidentally are almost all Mercedes, mostly brand new) provide tours of the island, on which you can step away from the pool, put down your Coral beer and get a taste of real native life.

Most Madeirans outside Funchal are farmers, and because of the steep mountains inland, life is difficult. But they are a very friendly people, and whether you speak Portugese or not, very willing to talk to you :)
