I am forced to give an explanation for such a wide variety in the categories for this upload:
MONSARAZ is a medieval village, the most ancient in the Reguengos de Monsaraz Borough, right in the heart of the Alentejo region, Monsaraz has human occupation vestiges since pre-historical times, and was in its origins as a locality, a fortified hill fort.
... well this may justify the "ruins".
Monsaraz is surrounded by an astonishing landscape, and from the top of the Castle one can appreciate all its splendour.
... this may justify the "nature"..
All the same, Monsaraz possess valuable and beautiful monuments, based in schist painted in bright white buildings, with houses coming up and down the hill (as you can see), in a magical environment that seems to have been lost in time.

From the castle where I shoot this one it descends from the primitive fortress conquered by Grealdo Sem Pavor by the middle of the 12th century.
From this primitive fortress not much survived to the dionisin reform and all we can see is a classical example of the military architecture of the beginning of the 14th century. It was enlarged immediately after the proclamation of D. Joăo IV.

The water you can see in the background is due to the
complex project, the ALQUEVA dam, that was built to produce hydroelectric power, irrigation for farms in the surrounding area, as well as a large reservoir where several tourist ventures are also being built.
The Alentejo is the driest and hottest region in Portugal. Persistent droughts are a problem. The climate and a lack of infrastructure has impeded economic development and isolated the area from the national and European economies.
