Photographer's Note

In Barcelona there are many examples of 'living statues' but they are mainly on pitches in the Ramblas the tree-lined avenue climbing from the waterfront into the city centre. Here they are personating Joseph and Mary with a doll for the infant Jesus - so two Sagrada Familia together. I guess some devout persons could consider their performance sacriligeous but the coins kept clinking into their collection tin and in return a tiny crucifix was pressed into your hand with some insistance. I assumed they would otherwise be considered beggars and moved on by the frequent and visible police we saw at all the tourist venues.
