Photographer’s Note
Refering to Aruna's Cokin tobacco filter used for his posting earlier today I might would like to dedicate this wednesday to Cokin (-: My own contribution would then be this shot.
In Stockholm during the summer the sun rises around fourish, but for this shot in the fall of 2000 I still had to get up that early. Walked about an hour to the wonderful island Djurgården where this bench can be found. Thought this could be wonderful subject for a sunrise. Despite the preceding sunny days I reached the bench and found myself in a very greyish and misty landscape.
Well, I am glad I tried to turn that disappointment into something constructive and this shot has been the result of that. Used the Cokin gradual filters No. 124 and the grey No. 121 to create a colour tone that approached the bench.
(note: to give this shot a more surreal look I choose to provide the upper branch part a gradually coloured background. See the discussion posting and the WS regarding the cropping)

Interesting shot...wait, have to take it in a bit. OK, I'm back. I like it. I like the perspective, the bench, the bluish tones on the bottom of the picture, but I don't like the tobacco filter on the top. It would have been INCREDIBLE to have everything but the bench in bluish tones. But don't get me wrong; I like this one as well. Great peaceful feeling and the tree looks like it's trying to snatch the bench (or whoever dares to sit there). Good work!
UPDATE: maybe taking off a bit off the top and making this into a square format would also look good? What do you think?

It's great how the filtered sky echoes the colour of the bench. I really like this one, even though I'm usually a little wary of most coloured filters, somehow this suits the scene.

This one's really nice - the composition's excellent, and the filter worked very well. Definitely has an 'I want to go back to bed' feel about it!

Ooooh! Very dramatic picture that you just want to stare at for minutes.
I think I'd like to see a *little* less up top (which I noticed you also cropped in the WS), as the colour goes a bit far for my tastes. I'm viewing this on my office 800x600 monitor, and I like how it's cutting off the top 20 percent - the filter is more subtle like that.
Congratulations - great save of what might have been poor conditions!

Wonderfut shot. I like the filter colors, it may seem exagerated in tones in the sky for a realistic picture but it's very creative and gives a superb artistic effect.

I find the filter work a too heavy, but other than that, very pleasing.
I particulrly like the infinite distance (or not) behind the dock and bench - there is NOTHING there at all. The dripping rain enhances the heavy, cold feel.
Looks just great.

Others have already said everything - a scene of great simplicity, the mood perfectly conveyed. I love the grey/blue colours of the wooden pier or wharf or whatever it is, and the dull brown of the bench stands out so well, yet is still subdued, in keeping with the scene.

as I have a copy of this one hanging on the wall in our livingroom, i had time to criticise it. It's still a very nice spot! but the filter is a bit too much. Still a beauty though ;)

Belle photo, on aimerait être assise sur ce banc, calme. Quel impact ce ciel orangé avec le bleu d'avant-plan, les couleurs complémentaires créent toute une différence. Bravo. J'aime beaucoup cette photo.

That's a lovely use for a filter Edwin, it's got a perfectly natural 'feel' to it, even though real life doesn't look like this, though I'd drop the saturation down slightly in Photoshop.

awesome feel - the depth, it inspires thought. a little artificial feeling with the filter work but it does contribute to the photograph in a positive way.

Nice. It some how gives the feeling of a Stephen King horror movie and I can almost hear the music. (Well that's me :-)) Good job with the Cokin filters.

briliant composition. beautiful how the bench in the mist seems the end of the world almost.
The mist also has a great effect on the colours. Right moment, right time, right eye (oke, and the right filters)!

Deep silence and respect,

Extremely simple and superb composed!
Incredible atmosphere, with only 4 elements!
Perfect contrast, beauty in everithing!
Original, above the nowhere, the unknown.
Waiting ... solitude .. stillness.

Great use of the filter. I never use a filter in shots, I like to capture everything in their natural colors but I must admit I worked very well in this picture. Perfect composition too. Wonderful shot!

What a pleasure to see this photo pop up in TE's random archive presentations. It serves as an illustrative example to learning members such as myself what can be done with the use of filters.Since you asked,I prefer your vertical workshop version because it increases the focus on the bench without losing the moody atmosphere added by the branches and "infinity" background.

Interesting picture and good composition. The background color seems un-natural but it adds mystery and artistic aspect to the picture. Makes you wonder what will happen next and who will use the bench later on in the day.

A very simple, beautiful, quiet composition. It has a wonderful balance of big and small. There are just a few big things in the photo - bench, pier, tree, and sky - nothing more. But there is also nice detail in all of them. It's detail that blends together beautifully, not distracting, not calling attention to little bits of things here or there.
I usually don't like to use much in the way of filters or digital processing to enhance photos. I like them to be natural, to show the viewer something he could have seen had he been at the scene of the shot. However, the filter works marvellously well here. The warm orange of the sky perfectly balances the cool blue green of the pier. The gradual color change lets the bottom of the photo have its proper color while still letting the top of the photo give a color balance to the whole.
You ought to be very proud of this photograph.

Fantastique photo!
Superbe! Toute mes félicitation pour cette photo.
Luc.

What an incredible composition. What I like the most, is the gradient from blue to gold in the back ground, it is simply unbelievable.
The tree and the bench are bringing delicate details to the picture. The paterns in the bench are even fitting with the tree.
One of my personal TE favorites...

Hey, good tones and good composition. I like this photo more than original. I think the photo also would be very well in B&W. It would give a dramatic and sad effect (maybe), but in colour also is very well, because the tones are correct with the composition. Well done!

Hoi Edwin,
Prachtige plaat!
Zeer goed gedaan!
Groetjes.
