Photographer's Note

Good Morning Everyone,

Have you ever heard of vaccary walls? They were medieval walls, consisting of huge slabs of stone, positioned vertically and placed side-by-side to mark the boundaries of oxen or cattle fields.

I have only ever seen them in my own neighbourhood of Wycoller, where they are quite famous for their rarity. However, when we were walking in The Lake District, near Hawkshead, we came upon this wall, which certainly fits the criteria for a vaccary wall.

I will post a photograph from Wycoller, here which shows a vaccary wall in Wycoller.(There are several examples around the village.) You will be able to see the similarities.

I hope you enjoyed this little bit of Northern History.

Have a good day,
Bev :-)
