May of 2020 had the sunniest and warmest weather in England since forever. I had managed to make some amazing local trips. In spite of the Britain leading in the number of deaths from Covid-19 in Europe, we are again allowed to make day trips and so I explored all directions. This trip was 3 hours car driving one direction.

Lake District is one of the most famous holiday destinations in England. The accommodation prices reflect that. The cheapest B&Bs I found were for 200Ł a night. For comparison, in Ireland, I paid 50€ per night in great quality B&Bs. It is popular and crowded. And it is hard to navigate. I even bought a dedicated guidebook but it appeared to be useless, similarly to Lonely Planet or DK guidebooks. They focus on history only. I like history but Lake District is a place which I would rather visit for the beauty of the nature. When I got there for first time, few years ago, I visited the most popular spots. For example, I took a boat tour on the Windermere Lake. It was quite a boring trip. Fortunately, on another occasion, I met there some TrekEarth members for a TrekEarth meeting. They showed me some new beautiful areas. After checking photos in internet, I found out that the western part of the park seems to have the nicest landscapes, mainly due to the higher mountains around. Sadly, the Western Lake District is one extra driving hour from where I live. Well, I wanted to see something extraordinary and new and I wanted it to be remote to avoid people.

Wast Water is the furthest lake to me. It is probably the most picturesque one. Because it is so far away there are no crowds around. Most people stay at the easily accessible Windermere anyway. Wast Water is the deepest lake in England (79 m) and it is surrounded by some of the highest mountain in the country, including the Scafell Pike (978 m), the highest mountain of England.
