This photo was taken on a flight from London to Tobago.

Montserrat, the "Emerald Isle of the Caribbean" is just south of Antigua and has an area of 39 sq miles.

Famed for it's volcanic eruptions, the population of the island has dropped dramatically in recent years as more and more of the land becomes uninhabitable. The population today is estimated to be 4,655, but prior to the first major eruption in July 1995, the population was around 13,000

In this photo you can see how ash covers a large portion of the southern part of the island (the left hand side.)
