Photographer's Note

Montserrat - a British overseas territory in the Caribbean - is home to what volcanologists describe as perhaps the most "interesting" volcano in the world.

Dormant for thousands of years, the Soufričre Hills volcano burst into action into life on July 18th 1995. Ever since, volcanic activity has been fairly regular. Although there hasn't been an eruption since 5th February 2010, the lave cone is continuing to swell and the increase in gas in the air suggests there is a lot of magma moving down in the earth. All this suggests that there will be another eruption in the future.

I took this photo from the Montserrat Volcano Observatory which is north of the volcano and provides fantastic views of the volcano and other parts of this beautiful island.
