Photographer's Note

The Belem Valley is a dry river bed on the south west coast of Montserrat.

In heavy rains the river runs again, and very heavily. As a result of volcanic activity further up the valley, rainwater washes a lot of mud and ash down the valley which means the area now looks like a bomb has gone off! Several houses have been destroyed, and I'll post some photos of these soon.

Whilst on vacation I was struck with a minor disaster. My camera broke! I took this photo on my iphone so the quality may not be fantastic but I still thought it was a shot worth taking. You can see the Soufriere Hills Volcano at the far end of the valley.
