Photographer's Note

Digitized from slide. This was taken in 1986 while driving from Dhahran, Saudi Arabia to Ankara, Turkey. I and friends spent about 3 days in Baghdad to see this wonderful city. This was of course much before the Gulf War and the most recent invasion. This is a well-known part of the city where two hotels (Sheraton Ishtar and Palestine hotels) and the Shahid Mosque are all located. Palestine Hotel was formerly Hotel Meridian but because of sanctions etc. it was acquired by locals and renamed Palestine Hotel. Please note the huge poster of Saddam in the lower left corner. A huge statue of Saddam Hussein was erected at this square in 2002(?); as many of you know it was toppled during the first few days of the Invasion in 2003.
