Photographer's Note

The Siq ("the shaft") is the main entrance to the ancient city of Petra in Jordan. It is a narrow gorge (in places only 3–4 m (9.8–13.1 ft) wide), a natural geological feature formed from a deep split in the sandstone rocks.
Petra is a historical and archaeological city in the southern Jordan, famous for its rock-cut architecture. It was established possibly as early as 312 BC as the capital city of the Nabataeans. Another name for Petra is the Rose City due to the color of the stone out of which it is carved. Petra has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1985. The site remained unknown to the Western world until 1812, when it was rediscovered by Swiss explorer.
