Photographer's Note
Moving further north from Wadi Rum, you reach the incredible town of Petra. Most tourists stop at the Treasury, but I continued uphill to the equally impressive Monastery, carved out of a cliff long before Mount Rushmore was even an idea. In the fg and at the right of the carvings are some donkeys. There are signs up to report any ill treatment to authorities. To reach the Monastery entails a climb up 850 steps to a plateau. The elevation of Petra is 810 metres. Some fat and out of condition tourists take a donkey up and the Jordanian drivers sometimes whip them until their legs bleed :-( I was happy enough to walk, taking frequent short 5 minute breaks. I had a bottle of iced water I had put in the hotel fridge the night before and there were more cold drinks for sale about half way up. It dates from the 1st century BC.
Despite offers by Jordanian locals to show me a short cut back to town, I took the way back that I knew past the Treasury, through the chasm (Siq), and finally to the carpark. From there I caught a metered taxi back to my hotel. More info and pics here:

Hello Chris,
Petra remains one of the most fabulous places I have ever seen. It is like a fairytale in real life. I spent most of two days exploring the area. It was never in my mind to stop at the Treasury, despite the heat. You managed a very good light and intense colours here, and the carved façade looks like it was made for 3D photos long before they knew anything about that. The donkey makes an impression too. It's hard to understand how the donkey drivers could injure the animals that provide them with a living.
Regards.

Bonjour Chris,
La composition est bien divisée, le ciel, le monastère et l'âne. La prise de vue permet de voir les détails du monastère de Pétra. La lumière met en valeur la beauté des couleurs. Bonne journée.

Hello Chris, having never been to this part of the world, I am enjoying viewing these shots of yours. Once again the scene suggests great heat! The shot is super sharp. The top part is beautifully highlighted in the bright sunshine.
The donkey emphasises the scale of the Monastery.
You gave us an interesting account of your visit.
Kind regards, Jean.

Hi Chris
I feel warm looking at this..
Superbly taken and incredibly interesting structures of that size with its splendid detail. Imagine carving a city out of stone!!! Boggles the mind. The combo of deep brown and polarised blue is so subtle in bright light where presence of the tiny donkey is a vital inclusion. Impressive shot
Best regards

Hi Chris
A good photo of the much visited Treasury and without a single fat out of condition tourist visible. Much better with the long suffering donkeys.
cheers

Hello Chris,
Your tours and explorations sound very exciting, maybe a little dangerous, at times!
My heart saddened at the treatment of these poor donkeys!
The fat people were obviously in that condition because they did't use their own legs enough!
This is a spectacular place, evidence of the determination and the skill of the craftsmen who carved this building. You have shown it to us with excellent clarity, the tiny donkey giving us the sense of scale.
My warm regards,
Bev :-)

Hello Chris,
A beautiful photo of the Petra Monastery.
The floodlight of the sun gives the facade a beautifully contoured relief, creating a good 3D image.
The lonely donkey shows us the right scale.
Excellent work
Have a good week, groet Rob

Hello, Chris!
These façades carved on the stone look really impressive, and the warm colors make the scene so attractive, it makes a very nice contrast with the deep blue sky! The horse is a perfect scale to the view! Wonderful place and composition!

Hi Chris
oh man, this is awesome. Looks so much like the more famous Treasury, but obviously not as popular. You completely lucked out with the donkey walking by. Sorry for the ignorant question, but were these actually used by people with a functional purpose, or are they just carvings? love it. cheers

Just kidding, I read your note :)

Hello Chris, the worldwide famous Petra ruins date from the 1st century BC. They represent a meticulous work of stone carving. A monastery with huge door and impressive pillars has been built in the mineral. The donkey in the fg gives us an idea of the scale here, it shows the monastery size

Hello Chris,
This is a very impressive structure carved out of a natural formation. It is interesting that I have recently watched a video that claims Petra was where Islam was started, that is where Mohammed lived but upon Petra's destruction, the Kaaba was moved to Mecca.
