Photographer's Note

Istanbul is getting ready for 2010, a crucial year, because it has been declared as the " Cultural Capital of Europe ". Many old (and until now neglected )monuments are being restored and have started to open their doors to the great public. This is one of the first pictures taken at Hunkar Pavilion, a small palace next to the 17th century Yenicami,( new Mosque ) also known as Valide Cami. I am happy to present this image, which shows the ornated gilded ceiling but especially the walls and the fireplace decorated with original Iznik tiles dating also from the 17th century. Some had been stolen and recovered, but unfortunately there still are some empty parts on the walls.
