Fatima's hand, a photo from Diyarbakir, Southern East Anatolia

Photographer's Note

Here another capture from my recent 3 days trip to Diyarbakir in South-East Turkey quite close to the Syrian border.
Almost all doors in the elder parts of the city bear quite artisanal paintings -often with religous backgrounds- like this one here.
It's the hand of Fatima

Symbolism of the hand of Fatima or with its full name "The jamsa" is a symbol formed by a hand with five fingers, with the middle finger right in the center. Attached to the middle finger are the index finger and the ring finger, which are a little shorter than the center finger, but share the same size between them.
On the sides, there are two thumbs, also of the same size, slightly inclined outwardly.

The symbol does not come directly from Islam. Although in the Koran superstition is prohibited, the five pillars of Islam are often represented by the five fingers of the hand of Fatima.

The Jewish people have used it to represent the Pentateuch, the five books of the Torah.

Cette main ressemble beaucoup ŕ une fleur. Une chose est certaine c'est qu'on doit se sentir bienvenu devant une porte aussi bien décorée et photographiée.

Interesting photo and note, fascinating cultural connotations. The painted blue door contrasts well with stark stone surrounding it and matches the colours of the plant pot.

This is also a splendid painting in the street with this beautiful hand of Fatima, which has also framed very well in that old door of old lintel.
