Photographer's Note

Muslim pilgrims feed the sacred carp at Balikligöl - otherwise known as Pool of Sacred Fish - in Urfa. It is believed the carp were created by God from firewood, and the water created from fire, when King Nemrut attempted to murder Abraham some 3000 years ago.

The pool is in the courtyard of the mosque of Halil-ur-Rahman, built by the Ayyubids in 1211 and now surrounded by attractive gardens designed by architect Merih Karaaslan.
