Photographer's Note

Well, I'll try to keep this short. Mostly because my wife will be home soon and I'm sure she expected more out of me today than what I did, which was almost nothing at all...

I started the day by going to the 2nd Annual Six Flags Garage Sale and Car Swap Meet early this morning. The parking lot for Six Flags over Mid-America amusement park was turned into a flea market, it was too much of a draw, even though it started out drizzling rain, I had to go.

I did spend a buck seventy five. Yep, one dollar to park and I bought a 150 year old wine glass for 75 cents. Hey, what can I say, I'm cheap! Every other "picker" (that's what people who frequent garage sales, tag and estate sales & flea markets for profit in St. Louis call themselves)in town was there, too. LOTS of competition. That didn't bother me none, because I brought my trusty ol' Nikon to occupy some of my time - it was not going to be a waste.

Turned out I found an old high school buddy there selling his stuff. I didn't know it, but he's a "picker", now, too. I hadn't seen Rick in at least 4 or 5 years, so I was happy to stand around and shoot the breeze (which was rather chilly) with him for a lot of the morning. I started feeling guilty, so I told him I was leaving for home, but ended up getting the camera out and wandering around the car swap meet on the other side of the parking lot.

I've been trying to learn to photograph people in everyday life situations, candid or not. For some reason, I seem to be having a hard time getting it down. Some folks make it look so easy! I thought I would practice there this morning.

It wasn't real long before I happened upon this pair of sellers. They had some choice merchandise, and although I don't want to claim to know much about these things, a couple nice rear ends. They actually had a whole flat-bed trailer full of them, but they didn't make such a nice photograph. I'm not sure if these guys hadn't sold anything yet, or were cold, or perhaps wanted by the cops, but they didn't laugh too much when I made a joke about their rear ends. Or smile for the photograph, either.

Well, as they say, such is life. And tomorrow is another day. And better luck next time. All of those...
