Photographer's Note

Just realised I've hit the 2,000 photo mark on TE.

Rutting is where males fight for dominance over the local females. The winner takes all.
Claude (Clodo) posted a Rutting Season photo from England a couple of days ago so I thought I'd better upload some actual rutting that we saw in Denali NP.
I took these on a day when we drove separately into the NP (You can only go so far).
All along the road were warning signs telling photographers not to leave the road as the rutting season was on. This is what we saw:
Photo 1: A moose wandering innocently along and feeding.
Photo 2: He comes across another male and it is heads down pushing one another - this is the actual rutting. Moose can get seriously injured but not in this case.
Photo 3: One gives up and starts to turn away.
Photo 4: The loser wanders away. He may try again next year while the triumphant one get all the females in the area.

Workshop 1 shows a couple of female moose who could soon be serviced by the victor above.
Workshop 2 shows another male moose, possibly a younger one from his antlers.
I did wish I'd had a longer lens with me.

There is better detail in the large version.
