Photographer's Note

After a late arrival on the ferry, the trip to Ward Lake Campground was very dark. Rain drumming on the camper roof woke me but sunshine soon prevailed and I followed this path through ancient trees.

A fellow camper from Alabama told the story of also arriving late on the ferry with no money. A First American cab driver had driven him to the campground, lent him a tent, given him all the food he had with him in the cab and promised to show him around Ketchikan later that day. The fellow said, "I've found my Shangri-La.

Southeast Alaska is identified as Tlingit territory; however, tribal members elected in the 2006 Ketchikan Indian Council tribal election also included Tsimshian from around Prince Rupert in British Columbia, and Haida from the Queen Charlotte Islands.
