Photographer's Note

At the Santa Monica Airportr there stands this monument in front of the Museum of Flying. It was sculpted by Yossi Govrin Yehudain 2009.

The sculpture portrays Donald Wills Douglas, Sr. (6 April 1892 – 1 February 1981) and his dog Wonderbar "Bar". Mr. Douglas was an influential American aircraft industrialist and engineer. He founded the Douglas Aircraft Company in 1921 (the company later merged into McDonnell Douglas Corporation). During World War II, Douglas joined the BVD (Boeing-Vega-Douglas) consortium to produce the B-17 Flying Fortress. He retired in 1957.

The B-17 was primarily employed by the US Air Force in the daylight precision strategic bombing campaign of World War II against German industrial and military targets. The United States Eighth Air Force, based at many airfields in southern England, and the Fifteenth Air Force, based in Italy, complemented the RAF Bomber Command’s nighttime area bombing in the Combined Bomber Offensive to help secure air superiority over the cities, factories and battlefields of Western Europe in preparation for the invasion of France in 1944.

It was a time when we were all united, side by side, in a worthy cause.

Mr. Douglas' Awards:
