Photographer's Note

Maui is often voted the most beautiful island in the world. No surprise that people visiting it focus on enjoying amazing beaches. Those who are more adventurous take a trip to the summit of the volcano where they can admire the sun rising above the clouds from 10,023 ft (3,055 m). For most of the visitors this is the end of adventure. After the spectacular sunrise they drive back to the beach. For me this was just the beginning. We hiked down the crater following the Sliding Sands Trail. The most colourful central spot is called Pele’s Paint Pot Lookout (in this photo). The red color alternates here with some green color tones. On the way back we have followed Halemau’u Trail. The whole distance is just 11.5 miles (18.5 km) but there are rather big changes in elevation. On the way back we were walking in a cloud. Completely exhausted I told my wife: think about something nice, imagine you are on holidays on Hawaii. For the whole day we didn’t meet almost anybody, there was nobody in sight. Just at the end of the trail we met two hikers. When they heard we are from Poland they congratulated us because earlier that month my country was accepted to European Union.

Sadly, it was in the pre-digital times. The picture here is a scan from print. Inspired by recent photo from Haleakala National Park by Ian (ifege).
