Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore, Porter, Indiana

It's a beautiful late summer day. You decide to take the day off and drive to the dunes at the south shores of Lake Michigan, about an hour's drive southeast of Chicago. After a winding drive through narrow roads off the freeway, thick vegetation and trees, and getting lost once, you finally arrive at the beach. From the top of the dunes, the view of the lake is spectacular ... you can't believe it's fresh water so bluegreen... so calm... it's just like the sea ... you can't even see the opposite shore! You see many people lazing around, sunning themselves on the beach or playing in the water. Someone is even windsurfing. You look to your left, you see a little bit of the Chicago skyline through the haze. You look to your right ... and you're presented with an enormous structure that is just not congruent with the scenery. The sight of a cooling tower of what appears to be a nuclear plant with steam rising on the top just jars you. You shudder. Visions of the apocalypse fill your head. Now you're afraid to go into the water.

You then learn that the site was indeed planned for a nuclear power plant but its construction was stopped (by some concerned group) and the plant was converted into a coal-fired power plant. You say to yourself, that's good to know ...you shrug your shoulders and proceed to climb down the dunes and frolic in the water like many others do.

I know that the photograph is faulty. I took it at low resolution (640 x 450) using the zoom - I just purchased the camera then and I didn't know how to use it much except point and shoot. But I wanted to share this disturbing scene with you. Post processing in Photoshop included increased contrast, and sharpening.
