Photographer's Note
Australian Grandprix 2004
First start of the Formula 1 at Albert Park, Melbourne, Australia. This one is the BAR Honda Team They were so fast and hard to capture from this angle. Actually, there were a safety cage all around but I found this position to be very close without the cage. Next year, I might buy a grandstand pass and I hope at the time I might have a super-telephoto lens to capture them! :D
What I like the most is that I can see the heat came from its exhaust... It was taken on the cloudy day as you can see the tone of the image.
The Result?
1st) M.Schumacher, Ferrari
2nd) R.Barrichello, Ferrari
3rd) F.Alonso, Renault

Great DOF. I agree with you that the heat from the engine creates a nice effect. I also like that one can see the dirt on the track which there was so much talk about. The vehicle is incredibly clear, this must have been a pretty slow curve? The ISO 800 setting gives a nice typical sports journalism touch to this picture.

Yes, great DOF indeed! Absolutely sharp and clear image - for the 200 km p/h you have managed brilliantly the composition and details! Just perfect!

Great action shot! You did well to get this so clear and sharp. Great colors and good composition. Well done! As a big fan of Formula One (and Schumi, of course) I really appreciate this :-)

Trčs bonne photo d'action meme si on aimerais plus de liberté sur l'avant de la voiture.
Ce qui est le plus saisissant sur cette image c'est que l'on ressent la chaleur derričre la voiture !
Vraiment bon !

:) Should have guessed you would be there Din. Lucky you :) I like how you have captured the heat blooms from the exhaust.
What corner were you on? Was it a good view?

You're so lucky to have been there, i've never been to a GP yet, but will some day... I think this is Kuma Satos car, as Jenson Buttons car has a red fin on the top. the exhaust fumes and a piece of dirt flying up really underline the quality of this shot, very professional. Did you get a good one of Schumacher?!

I guess that is one of the rare shots on TE where one would see a shutter speed of 1/4000s ;-) But the result is just according: excellent sharpness and detail on the car. You even composed this well, with the blurred spectators in the back, and the ad signs following the bend of the curve. Great job, Din.

Great DOF and I love the sharpness. It really captures the movement of the car but in a very quick and still way. The heat of the exhaust is a great addition in this shot. I also like how it gives the blurred people behind it an impressionist look. Very nicely photographed. It was a very good race and I was very pleased with the results. I want to get to Montreal and hope I can get a position at least half as good as what you found here.

The heat of the formula 1 is very stunning as the sharpness of your shot. Very well framed. Bravo!

If the car is moving at 200 km/h, I would expect to see some suggestion of movement in the photo but there is none, the car is standing absolutely still, it could as well be parked. The telelens has condensed the background into a nice pattern, I like that. As to capturing the 200 km/h I think the photo fails.

I think that you could have dropped the shutter speed a little, and the blur in the tires would have been enough to give some impression of speed. Otherwise a very good shot.

Fantastic shot Din! But the shutter speed is so fast that it is hard to believe there is movement. A slower shutter speed perhaps? Nevertheless a wonderful shot.

Din - this is brilliant. You can even see the blistering on the tyres (Wonder if the Bridgestone's also looked like that!) What I like especially is the number of red caps in the crowd! You are SOOO lucky to have been there! It is just a tragedy that you could not post Ferrari - maybe they were too fast, no?? Thanks for sharing this one - I love it!

Dear Din, you have a great photo here :) I attended 4 times Hockenheim and 1 time Monaco. Thanks to the former girlfriend of my brother we always had VIP tickets for the first day as she was with Mobil. That was back in the mid 90ies. To all who haven't seen a race live: After the initial adventure is gone, it is pretty boring. You see only one part of the track, the cars are sooo fast and the interesting stuff is happening somewhere else. So I really prefer to watch it on TV. But on the other side it is also very cool to get the atmosphere of a race. So you see I'm not decided yet. Last year in Monaco it was crazy, we were close to the Casino and if I would have reached out my hand it would have been driven off, that close we were. The pandemonium that those cars unleash is physical pain, please believe me. Protect your ears and what is between them ;-)
The best part of the pic in my opinion is that you showed us a dirty part of the track. On TV they always tell us that the track has a good and a bad part. You show us both here. BTW how very great the picture would be with another car being chased in the background. They just won't hold still... ;-)

Fantastic shot from a very special event. Nice to see the global circus of F1 represented here also. I watched this race live at 4 am after only a few hours sleep. But I will catch at least one of the races here in Europe live this season. And get some close-up shots - hopefully as good as yours. Thanks for sharing.

Nice capture, the heat haze definitely adds to the photo. I'd like to have seen a little less room on the right of the photo, and a little more on the left, though. Placing the car so close to the left of the frame automatically gives a feeling that the car is braking / slowing, and coupled with the high shutter speed and lack of motion blurring this causes one to feel that the car is travelling rather slowly. Given the challenging location that you mention, it may not have been possible to pan for motion blur, but capturing the car closer to the right of the frame would still have helped give more of an impression of speed.
Still, very nice shot nonetheless. :)
