Photographer's Note
I'm pretty sure we all recognize this structure in Lisbon, even if you haven't travelled here.
Even if it has been photographed a million times, I havn't photographed it yet and we all need to have these subjects in our our personal galleries right? Same goes with the Eiffel tower.
When I arrived in Lisbon, this was one of my first stops, first destinations I wanted to see. You get here from taking one of the trams, about a 30 min ride. This location has 4 major sights to see - The Monuments of Discoveries (ths one), Torre de Belem, the New Museum of Modern Art, and the massive Monastery Mosteiro dos Jeronimos. To see these 4 sights, you need basically a full day, so it will keep you busy for sure. I wanted to get these 4 done quickly, then focus in on the downtown Lisbon area.
It was disappointing in that the tower portion was closed on this day, and for a number of days following due to renovations. I was looking forward to climbing up to the top and capturing city views, oh well, that's life I guess, it doesn't always go as planned.
It was however, a fun day, a fun experience, and i"m glad its been taken off of my bucket list. Capturing these two young ladies relaxing seemed like the best idea photo wise, I hope you like it as much as I do.

Hello Craig,
No time to relax in Lisbon. It's just jam packed with sights to see and photograph! Missed this spot, but did visit most of the main sites. The ornate Vasco Da Gama Memorial, or to Portuguese explorers in general seems to be near the suspension bridge, which my train to Tavira crossed. Tfs!

An outstanding monument, a place that is a "must visit" while in Lisboa, Craig.
Always crowded in daytime, but your picture had a nice bonus with the two young ladies having fun in the sun.
Have a nice Sunday,

Hello Craig,
Really cool picture. I have seen this monument many times before indeed, but never in its entirety, only parts of the sculptures. This photo gives a splendid overview of the place and the light and sharpness are excellent. I like the contrast with the bridge and the modern seaport in the background. The many tourists in the foreground add life and colour.

Hi Craig
I agree with you 200%. One of the most essential human rights (imho) is to be able to take photos of even the most photographed locations. We all have done that. It's nice to see you found your own special angle - what a foreground!! ;-)
Have a great week

Ciao Craig
Saluti

Hi Craig,
The presence of the people has an effect of scale. The point of view is showing the details of the Padrăo dos Descobrimentos. The light is giving good colors rendering. Have a nice day.

Hello Craig,
I saw this monument but it was not at all top of my list of things to see in Lisbon. I don't feel the same need as you to have the most popular places and monuments in my own gallery, unless I could take a picture in a very special way. I wouldn't say that this is radically different from every other photo I have seen from this place, but the girls in the foreground are amusing and colourful enough to give the photo an individual touch, so that is good enough for me. Primarily it's the sharpness and contrasts that impress me the most. The statues on the monument have an amazing 3D quality.
Best wishes,
Gert

Hi Craig
A familiar sight, really well captured. The bottom of the picture makes all the difference. The people lying there and the inverted triangle in the composition.
Cheers

Hello Craig,
I think most photographers would be over the moon with this shot!
Not only have you captured the monument with excellent clarity and composition within the frame but, you have also included a f/g narrative, a sense of place and what looks like a b/g container port!
It's a cracker!
Have a lovely day,
Bev :-)

Hi Craig,
we've been here twice, the last time in June 2017, and in June 2018 we will return in Lisbon, because we're in love with this beautiful city. In fact, I finished our hotel reservation and the purchase of the flight tickets three hours ago ;o)
It's a splendid place, and you offers to us all the elegant architecture of this monument in a great view, where you've corrected efficiently the distortion of vertical lines due to the perspective.
People adds a very dynamic and vital atmosphere in the composition.
A nice job, my friend.
Kind regards,
Josep

Oi, Craig!
Recentemente vi uma lista onde essa escultura estava dentre as mais bonitas do mundo. Eu realmente concordo com essa lista. Pessoalmente, a escultura deve ser ainda mais imponente. O enquadramento é bem feito e a luz é excelente.
Ótima foto!

Hello Craig, Iconic monument in Lisbon. excellent rather narrow cut. I do not remember if it was possible to go up here when I was there. I am sure I was somewhere but probably it was Torre de Belem, not far from here. Nice view of the two girls relaxing, But is it comfortable ? I doubt it.

Hello Craig,
I like the way you filled the frame here. The people lounging in the foreground are the perfect opposite to all of the activity going on closer to the monument. The monument itself is very impressive, and I like the line of giant people rising upwards.
On a side note, I know I haven't posted anything new since Christmas. First we had two weeks of brutal cold, and I tried to stay inside as much as possible, then I got sick with a virus that's had me sidelined for over a week now. Stay tuned...I'll come up with something new when things get back to "normal". ;-)

Hello Craig,
A bit a funny picture with the two young girls who enjoy sunbathing.
But very good that you decided to include them on the image.
They also help to give more depth to the photo.
I understand you have been looking out to visit this district of Lisbon. The nearby Monastery Mosteiro dos Jeronimos and the Torre de Belem are real beauties.
I wasn't much impressed by this monument but you show us here a very good picture of it.
Best regards, Paul

The curves of the interesting, colossal monument and the sidewalk leading to it generate pleasant shapes in your frame. Well seen and nicely rendered.

Hi Craig,
Indeed I was passing near this monument but I didn't take any satisfactory photo there. Next time I must pay attention to attractive girls laying on the pavement and enjoying sun...
Fantastic composition with people's presence adding so much life and interest.
I suppose these are the Coimbra students who followed you to Lisbon after they threw their gowns into the air...
Great reportage!!

Hello Craig, I have been meaning to comment on this for a while, so here it is...
The two young ladies sunbathing really make this picture for me! All the visitors coming and going to see the Monument, and they would rather be sunbathing! (I am sure that they had probably looked at it too!)
The vertical presentation is perfect.
Great composition.
The ships and cranes in the distance add even more interest.
If I were in Lisbon, this is one of the places that I would have to see for myself. It is a beautiful monument.
Regards Jean.

Hello Craig You've been so lucky to capture this iconic monument of Lisbon with such great mastery! When we were over there, five months later, it was completely hiding behind scaffoldings for a major rejuvenation process. Thanks for showing in full glory under the morning sun. Cheers
