Photographer’s Note

I had not intended to post this photo today, but having heard this morning the alarming news from Roma I changed my plans, thinking it's about time to express sympathy and support to Poland and all Poles around the world, including numerous ones in France.

This photo has been taken on Krakow's "Rynek Glowny" (Main Market Square) and shows the Gothic "Kosciol Mariacki" (St Mary’s Church), with its twin spires, that really catches the eye. Within this church is the 15th-century Chapel of Our Lady of Czestochowa and Wit Stwosz’s large stone crucifix and wooden polyptych, The Dormition of the Virgin of 1477-89, the largest Gothic altar in Europe.

As you may know, Karol Józef Wojtyła, Cardinal of Krakow, became pope of the Roman Catholic Church on October 16, 1978 under the name John Paul II.
